ULEZ in London; what to expect, where to expect it & when to expect it…

December 11, 2018

The Ultra Low Emission Zone in London will replace the T Charge from the 8th of April 2019. The new zone will be operational 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, all year round. Targeting the same areas as the current Congestion Charge Zone (CCZ) which costs £11.50 on a daily basis for entry.

Why is ULEZ being introduced? Well air pollution can reduce the lifespan of someone living within London by up to 17 months and causes around 9,400 early deaths every year. These figures highlight the drastic need for change, ensuring that we tackle the toxic air problem within urban areas to reduce these figures and prevent the situation from worsening.

So, what does the ULEZ zone mean for vehicles operating within this area? Well if they do not comply with the requirements then they will face additional charges when driving in these areas on top of the £11.50 CCZ. Most people that are commuting within this area using cars or motorbikes will face an extra £12.50 per day. However, there could be a significantly larger fee for HGV’s and buses with charges of up to £100 per day being discussed.

These plans are only the beginning for ULEZ within London as they commit to reducing the level of toxic gas within our air, shortly after the initial introduction there are plans to expand ULEZ in 2021. This will mean that all areas within the North and South circular are included.

Does your vehicle comply with ULEZ requirements? The current standards can be found below:
• Euro 3 for motorcycles, mopeds, motorised tricycles and quadricycles
• Euro 4 for petrol cars, vans, minibuses and other specialist vehicles
• Euro 6 for diesel cars, vans and minibuses and other specialist vehicles
• Euro VI for lorries, buses and coaches and other specialist heavy vehicles
